New Orleans Saints News: 49ers Sign Jonathan Goodwin To 3-Year Deal

The San Francisco 49ers have returned the favor after the Saints signed away defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin yesterday, announcing they have signed center Jonathan Goodwin to a three-year contract worth a reported ten million dollars or more.

Goodwin had been the Saints starting center since 2008 after Jeff Faine‘s departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency. He has started 45 of 48 games for the Saints since 2008, and while never considered an elite center he played well inside Sean Payton‘s offensive scheme.

New Orleans has three  other centers on the roster — Matt Tennant, UDFA Ryan Taylor, and Cecil Newton — and out of three the likely starter would be Tennant.

Tennant was considered the top center prospect coming out of college last year . The Saints traded up to get him, and so far in training camp coaches have been pleased with his progress and development given the increased workload.

Cecil Newton is Cam Newton‘s brother, this years top overall pick and the Panthers hopeful new number one quarterback. His signing yesterday by the Saints may have been an indication they expected Goodwin to depart in free agency.

Newton played for the Jacksonville Jaguars before finding his way to the soon to be defunct UFL.
