Who Dat Dish: New Orleans Saints News, Rumors and Links for 4/26

The first round of the 2013 NFL draft is in the books and former Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro will be donning the black and gold of the New Orleans Saints.

We’re just getting started.

Today we will examine some of the news surrounding Vaccaro and more as we prepare for the rest of the draft.

Let’s take a look.

Sean Payton Held a Press Conference to Discuss Kenny Vaccaro

Per the Saints official site:

Q: Do you see him more as a strong safety or free safety?

A: “He has versatility. I think when you watch him play and you study game tape, he plays a lot of nickel because of the amount of spread offenses they saw in their league last year. There were a lot of snaps where he is down in the paint with two safeties behind him, covering down on the number two. One of the things that is attractive about this player is that he can do that and he’s got that versatility to play not only safety, but to play down over the slot. You saw a lot of evidence of that. In fact, we had to go back and get more snaps of true safety film on him, rather than nickel film. I think he’s versatile enough to play either one of the safety positions and certainly a guy that can handle some of the nickel.”

Kenny Vaccro is Happy to be a Member of the Saints

Per the Saints official site:

Q: What do you think about joining a defense that struggled last year?

A: “I am going to come in and help that.  Obviously they felt like that they needed to fix that and I understand that is what they drafted me for, so that’s my plan.  If I can make an impact early on whether that be special teams (or defense), whatever they want me to do I’m going to do.”

ESPN Gives Its Take on Kenny Vaccaro in New Orleans

Per Pat Yasinskas:

Now, let’s move onto Vaccaro. I’m a little surprised the Saints didn’t go with a pass-rusher at this spot as they convert to a 3-4 scheme. But this shows that new coordinator Rob Ryan saw some major problems in the existing secondary. I think this move probably means the beginning of the end for strong safety Roman Harper.

B/R Gives Its Analysis on the Kenny Vaccaro Pick

Per Matt Stein:

Roster Outlook

Vaccaro should challenge Roman Harper for a starting job from day one. If he isn’t a full-time starter, he should definitely contribute in a huge way as a rookie.

Pick Analysis

This is the type of exciting player that New Orleans needed to add to its defense. Not only does Vaccaro fill a huge need in the secondary, but he also has the potential to become an elite player.

With Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and Josh Freeman in the NFC South, this was a fantastic pick by the Saints.
