It’s another quiet Sunday in the world of the New Orleans Saints, but there is plenty to still talk about with the draft recently over and serious positional battles set to get underway sooner rather than later.
Today we’ll look at Saints history, talk positional battle and more.
Let’s take a look.
Per Dave Cariello:
Much needed considering that just two years ago, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Saints owner Tom Benson nearly pulled the trigger on a complete organizational move to Austin, TX.
Which is why Benson’s announcement on May 5th, 2008 that he would be purchasing local television station WVUE-TV FOX 8 was such a big deal.
The purchase was a huge show of support, particularly to those of us living here in New Orleans, and proved that Benson was now clearly set on keeping the Saints in New Orleans for the long term.
Per Pat Yasinskas:
Once the team begins its on-field portion of the offseason workouts, things are going to get very competitive. As the Saints switch to a 3-4 scheme, there are a lot of starting jobs open on the defense. There are particularly big questions at outside linebacker and in the secondary. Other than cornerback Keenan Lewis, the salary cap prohibited the Saints from making any big signings in free agency. Instead, they brought in some lower-level free agents and added some parts in the draft. The competition for starting jobs will start in the offseason program and will intensify in training camp.
Per Pat Yasinskas:
Mike Triplett writes that several analysts are high on third-round picks Terron Armstead and John Jenkins. Armstead is going to get a chance to compete with Charles Brown and Jason Smith for the starting spot at left tackle. Jenkins is likely to get some immediate playing time at defensive tackle.
Per Jeff Duncan:
Story of the week…
Lawrence Okoye: ‘I’m Not Going to Limit Myself.’ Did you know that British Olympic discus thrower Lawrence Okoye worked out for the Saints? I didn’t either. But I learned that among other things in this fascinating profile of the wannabe NFL defensive lineman, who has signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
