Former Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman La’el Collins hasn’t played in the regular season since tearing his ACL at the end of the 2022 season. After spending a year on the Buffalo Bills practice squad, the former LSU Tiger is positioning for a return to the field with the New Orleans Saints.

It’s hard to imagine Collins commanding a big contract. Bringing him in would be a low-cost move for the Saints that would add to the unit's depth.

The Saints starting unit is set, but there is still battles to be had behind the starters. Collins has primarily played right tackle but did start his career as a guard. His experience could help him fill a role as a multipurpose player.

La'el Collins connection with Kellen Moore

Collins played for the Cowboys from 2015 to 2021 and was present for Kellen Moore's ascension from player to position coach to coordinator. The only thing he hasn't been present for is Moore's jump from coordinator to head coach. If Collins has his way, that'll change.

"Obviously I had to tell him that I’m here for him, too. If he ever needs to call me, I’ll be ready," Collins told Matt Moscona on After Further Review. The offensive lineman's interest in coming back to the state of Louisiana is certainly the driving force of the conversation, but it's notable that he and Moore have spoken.

Don't confuse conversations with negotiations, even if the topic is about Collins possibly joining the Saints. The two having a conversation shows there is still a connection, and connections go a long way in this business.

Even if Collins doesn't suit up for the Saints, he believes they are in good hands. Collins expressed confidence in Moore's ability saying, "he's going to be a great coach in the NFL for a long time."

Is Collins healthy?

It's impossible to have a conversation around Collins without discussing his health. He missed the majority of the 2016 season and the entire 2020 and 2023 seasons due to injuries. He was available to play last year but never made it on the field for the Bills.

When asked about his health status, Collins gave a huge vote of confidence. “I’m 100 percent. I can finally say that, and feeling really good.” Sounds like Collins checks the health and connection boxes, to the state and coach. It wouldn't hurt to at least check in on Collins to bolster the competition along the offensive line.
