There were no real surprising cuts revealed on Saturday. The most noteworthy players released were veteran linebacker Clint Ingram and rookie linebacker Nate Bussey, a seventh-round draft pick who will likely be re-signed to the practice squad.
According to a report from Pro Football Talk, a “huge gap” remains in the contract talks between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees. The report cites an unnamed source as saying no deal appears imminent between the two sides.
It doesn’t seem likely that the Saints would be willing to trade away their second round pick to get him, if that’s what it would actually take, considering the talent they have assembled on the roster already at weakside linebacker.
Meriweather is known for his violent tackles on opponets. In a recent Sports Illustrated article, Meriweather stated he was taught to tackle by his uncle and cousin at an early age by hitting a punching bag that they suspended from a tree.
No-brainer: The Saints, who ran out of running backs in last seaosn’s playoffs, are determined not to let it happen again. Even though Chris Ivory was put on the injured-reserve list, the Saints kept Joique Bell to go along with Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles.
