The New Orleans Saints are the laughingstock of the NFL. After grabbing the league’s attention with two dominant wins in the first two weeks of the season, the Saints have lost their last five games. The games aren’t just losses either, they’re embarrassing losses.

The most recent one came on Thursday Night Football, when New Orleans hosted the Denver Broncos for a Week 7 matchup. Sean Payton was returning to town, Drew Brees was being inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, and it was a primetime game. If nothing else, the Saints should be able to pull together to deliver a proud performance, win or lose.

That didn’t happen. Instead, New Orleans was embarrassed, losing 33-10. Players were visibly angry throughout the game, analysts questioned the team’s effort and commitment, and fans made it clear they wanted head coach Dennis Allen fired.

With how the Saints have looked the last five weeks, and how they’ve looked the last 2.5 years, it’s fair to assume Allen has to be on one of the hottest seats in the NFL. He was asked about that after the disheartening loss, and he somehow managed to give the most oblivious answer ever.

Allen flat out said that he’s not worried about his job. That’s an unfathomable response after what everyone saw on Thursday night.

Dennis Allen isn’t worried about being fired after Saints lose fifth straight game in embarrassing fashion

Allen is either clueless, or general manager Mickey Loomis has made him feel extremely secure. All things considered, the latter may actually be the case. Throughout Allen’s tenure as head coach, Loomis has made it clear that he’ll be on Allen’s side even if the entire world is against him.

When Allen’s general manager is comparing him to Bill Belichick and Chuck Noll, while he’s compiling an average coaching record, or helping him elude blame as the team collapses on his watch, it actually makes sense that he isn’t concerned about his job.

Still, that’s not the message a coach should be sending out to the world after he and his team just got ran out of their own building. Obviously, Allen isn’t going to come to the podium and campaign for himself to be fired, but he could at least admit that when teams look how the Saints look right now, every position gets evaluated, especially the head coach.
