Well, the Klint Kubiak era for the New Orleans Saints is officially over. After being hired as offensive coordinator last offseason, his one year with the team will be remembered as unfulfilled potential, as several injuries to key players thwarted what could’ve been an elite offense.
Kubiak is now taking his talent to the Seattle Seahawks, with them hiring him as offensive coordinator on Sunday. In recent weeks, he had emerged as the favorite for the role, and now the deal is finally done.

It became clear that New Orleans would have to replace Kubiak, because he was receiving interest from multiple teams. In addition to Seattle, Kubiak interviewed for the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator role, and Aaron Glenn was reportedly interested in adding him to his staff on the New York Jets.
All of this interest came after the Saints averaged 320.1 yards and 19.9 points a game— 21st and 24th in the league, respectively. However, everyone could see Kubiak’s talent through his circumstances. His circumstances were losing his three interior linemen, top two receivers, starting quarterback, and various other key players. It’s hard for any play caller to overcome loses like that.
When everyone was healthy at the beginning of the year, the offense scored 47 points in Week 1 and 44 points in Week 2. Of course, New Orleans wasn’t going to score over 40 every game, but with good health, the offense would’ve been far more productive than it ultimately was.
Kubiak now has another opportunity to go and prove that in Seattle, and the Saints will have to find someone to replace him. The good thing is that all but one of the remaining candidates in the Saints’ coaching search are offensive-minded coaches. That means New Orleans will likely hire someone that’s ready to implement their own offensive system anyway.
