The New Orleans Saints were the second team to fire their head coach during the 2024 season, moving on from Dennis Allen after Week 9. Now, the Saints are the only team that hasn’t hired a new coach. With only the Super Bowl left to be played, six teams have found their new leaders.

New Orleans has been handed a few setbacks throughout the process. Candidates like Aaron Glenn and Joe Brady chose other opportunities without even taking an in-person interview with the Saints, and a rare winter storm in the Gulf Coast led to the Saints pausing their search. The combination of those events are why New Orleans is the only team still interviewing candidates.

One candidate still in the mix for the Saints is Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and the Saints are planning to take a big step with him. Since the Eagles punched their ticket to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Moore is still in season. However, New Orleans is planning to fly to Philadelphia on Monday to conduct an in-person interview with the young offensive coordinator.

Typically, in-person interviews happen at the franchise’s facility. However, the Saints understand that Kellen Moore is preparing for the biggest game of his coaching career, which coincidentally is taking place in New Orleans. Knowing he has a big two weeks ahead of him, the Saints are meeting him where he’s at. That shows that Moore is a serious candidate to be New Orleans’ next head coach.

At 36 years old, his ascension through the coaching ranks has happened relatively fast. After spending three years as a quarterback on the Dallas Cowboys roster, he retired and became Dallas’ QB coach the very next season. A year after that, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, and served in that role for four years. He then spent a year as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, before moving on to Philly this season.

Now, his next step could be as head coach for the New Orleans Saints. His in-person interview with the team will determine if that’s the case or not.
