Saints forced to delay coaching search, and that could put them at a disadvantage

The New Orleans Saints have delayed their coaching search for things beyond their control, but the delay could still put the team at a disadvantage.

On Tuesday, a rare winter storm hit the Gulf Coast, prompting the first-ever Blizzard Warning for the area. New Orleans is one of the affected areas, so with safety taking priority over everything else, the New Orleans Saints have put a brief pause on their coaching search.

With multiple in-person interviews scheduled for this week, NFL insider Tom Pelissero is reporting the Saints are re-scheduling those interviews because of the severe weather. The team initially planned to meet with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on Tuesday, and defensive coordinators Aaron Glenn (Detroit Lions) and Anthony Weaver (Miami Dolphins) on Wednesday. Those interviews are now being moved to later in the week.

Saints reschedule coaching interviews after winter storm hits New Orleans

This is something completely out of the Saints’ control, and it’s absolutely the right decision to put everyone’s safety first. However, this delay in the search could have ramifications that don’t favor New Orleans, because while the Saints are paused, the coaching carousel is still spinning.

On Tuesday, Aaron Glenn is having an in-person meeting with the New York Jets, and it’s been reported that New York doesn’t want him to leave the building without a signed contract. Glenn is considered the top candidate for the Jets and the Saints, and he was scheduled to meet with them on back-to-back days.

That's no longer the case, and the longer New York is able to speak with Glenn before he makes it to New Orleans, raises the probability of Glenn never making it to his in-person interview with the Saints. This unfortunate delay for New Orleans could be the window of opportunity the Jets need to close the deal with Glenn.

If that is the case, the Saints will have to move on to the other candidates on their list, as they search for a new head coach.
