On the day of the 2024 NFL trade deadline, the New Orleans Saints have sent star cornerback Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders. In exchange for the veteran corner, New Orleans is getting back a third-round pick, a fourth-found pick, and a sixth-round pick from Washington, but the Saints are also sending a fifth-round pick to the Commanders

Lattimore is a player whose name has been in trade talks since the offseason. With the Saints currently on a seven-game losing streak, they fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday, and trade talks for Lattimore heated back up with the deadline on Tuesday.

Multiple contenders, including the Kansas City Chiefs, were linked to Lattimore, but it’s the Commanders, that pulled the deal off. Lattimore is now going to Washington, and the Saints are starting a rebuild.

Washington is a team that’s taking the league by storm this year, as people didn’t predict the team would be buyers at the trade deadline. However, Dan Quinn, in his first year as head coach for the team has the Commanders at 7-2, and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is in MVP discussions.

The surprise success accelerated their rebuild, so now they’re making moves to compete. Bringing in Lattimore, who has two years left on his deal after this season, gives Washington an elite corner for two and a half more seasons.

For the Saints, this is the end of an era for a player that has been a star in New Orleans since being drafted by the team in 2017. During his time with the team, he went to four Pro Bowls, and won Defensive Rookie of the Year. He also established himself a one of the league’s best corners, and was a key piece of the franchise's culture for the last eight seasons.

This move signifies the end of an era in New Orleans, as the team turns the page to a rebuild.
