New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr sustained an oblique injury in Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and on Tuesday, it was reported Carr would be missing multiple weeks with the injury. That means New Orleans will have a different quarterback start a game for the first time since Carr joined the Saints last season.

The natural assumption was Jake Haener would be the starter. Haener had been QB2 all season, entering games in the blowout wins, and when Carr went down with injury. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, who is a fan favorite, has been inactive all year, designated as the emergency quarterback for every game so far.

However, now that New Orleans actually has to pick one of the young quarterbacks to start a game, their order on the depth chart could look a bit different. Mike Garafolo, who broke the news that Carr would be sidelined for multiple games, also reported that Rattler is a strong candidate to start in Carr’s absence.

Spencer Rattler reportedly a strong candidate to start for Saints

Fans have been infatuated with Rattler since New Orleans selected him in the fifth round of the 2024 Draft. He’s a talented quarterback, that was once expected to be a first-round pick, and his promise was on display in the preseason. That’s why Saints fans started pushing the agenda for Rattler to start.

Ultimately, the rookie lost the backup quarterback battle, though many fans and media members thought he outperformed Haener. Now, six weeks into the season, fans’ wish may come true, and Rattler may end up spending some time as QB1.

Knowing how the Saints operate, New Orleans likely won’t announce a starter until game day. The team didn’t even announce a backup QB until they had to in Week 1.

Whichever young quarterback gets the nod will have a major opportunity in front of them. New Orleans has dropped its last three games, and it looks like the season is slipping away. If the next quarterback can come in, play well, and lead the Saints to a few victories, they could lock themselves in as the starter for the rest of the season, and years moving forward.
