The New Orleans Saints waited as long as they could before deciding on a backup quarterback, but everyone knew the either or game with Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler would come to an end ahead of the Week 1 game against the Carolina Panthers. That’s exactly what happened Sunday morning when the team announced their inactives.

Among the seven inactive players was Spencer Rattler. The rookie was designated as the third emergency quarterback, so the only way he’ll be playing is if Derek Carr and Jake Haener both sustain injuries. That’s the case for Sunday, but as we know, things can change all throughout the season.

Currently, Jake Haener is QB2 in New Orleans, and that’s not the news most Saints fans were hoping for.

Saints name Jake Haener QB2 over Spencer Rattler

Rattler has been a fan favorite since he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and many Saints fans are already convinced he’s the future of the franchise. However, that’s not enough. There’s a contingent of Saints fans that want Rattler to be the present, and start for New Orleans now. This movement has affectionately been termed The Agenda— #TheAgenda if you’re on social media.

That agenda took a hit on Sunday with Rattler seemingly losing the backup quarterback battle. However, the rookie did outplay Haener in the preseason, specifically in the final preseason game. That makes this decision somewhat of a surprise, though, head coach Dennis Allen did admit Haener has performed well in practice, and teams take more than preseason games into account when deciding the depth chart.

Either way, Spencer Rattler is opening the season as QB3 in New Orleans. That doesn’t mean it will stay that way, it just means Rattler has more work to do before the agenda can rest.
