The New Orleans Saints, along with the rest of the NFL, have started OTAs— a voluntary portion of offseason activities. Since OTAs are voluntary, there’s no guaranteeing that all players will report, regardless of how much coaches want attendance to be 100%. That’s the situation that’s currently playing out for the Saints.

Head coach Dennis Allen has made it clear that he wishes all of New Orleans’ players were in attendance, but that’s not the case. In fact, two of the Saints biggest stars, Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore, have both been absent. Both of their absences have been noteworthy. For Lattimore, his absence comes after an offseason of trade rumors. For Kamara, his absence comes while new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is putting in a new offense.

On Tuesday, Dennis Allen spoke about Kamara not being in attendance while the offense is being installed, and he had a lot to say. He started his statement by saying that obviously Kamara not being in attendance during this critical time can present challenges. However, Allen went on to express that he knows that players, especially veterans, have other responsibilities outside of football. Ultimately, Allen is trusting that Kamara is doing what he needs to do to be ready for the season.

In the end, this is all Allen can really do. Alvin Kamara turns 29 this offseason and he’s preparing for his eighth NFL season. As a five-time Pro Bowler, the veteran running back should know what’s necessary to be at his best when the season arrives.

However, the fact that New Orleans is installing a new offense is definitely an important factor in the equation. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has already come out and said that Kamara has met with him multiple times, though. Kubiak expressed that he learned how bright Kamara is in those meetings. So ultimately, it doesn’t seem like there’s much to be concerned about. Kamara should be ready to go physically and mentally once the season arrives.
