Derek Carr’s recent fine shows the NFL remains the no-fun league
Week 2 was one of the most fun days for the New Orleans Saints in recent memory. The team went on the road and absolutely dominated the Dallas Cowboys, and fans even took over the Texas streets following the win. All in all, it was a ton of fun for everyone in black and gold.
Naturally, the league saw that happening and said not on my watch. Fans have often joked the NFL stands for No Fun League, and the league continues to prove that’s not a joke at all. The latest example of that was the NFL deciding to fine Saints quarterback Derek Carr for one of his celebrations in Week 2.
Right before halftime, Carr scored on a quarterback sneak, and the touchdown gave New Orleans 35 points. Clearly in a good mood, the veteran quarterback broke out a Michael Jackson dance move. Unfortunately, the league fined him $14,000 for the celebration because he grabbed his crotch.
Derek Carr fined for Michael Jackson celebration
Honestly, this makes no sense— especially when you consider how much the league uses moments like this to promote the game. It’s a celebration that’s been replayed, shared on sociall, and discussed by people not even in the Saints circle. Additionally, it’s not even a suggestive dance move; just an ode to a legend.
But, obviously, the NFL doesn’t care about any of that. The league just wants to police fun and take players’ money.
Coincidently, the Saints were fined for a celebration the last time they played in Dallas, which was back in 2018. Star cornerback Marshon Lattimore forced and recovered a fumble, and as a celebration, he pulled some real money out of his knee pad, and dropped it into the famous Salvation Army Kettle in AT&T Stadium. The donation led to him giving $13,369 more the league.
You can’t dance or promote a good cause for free while the NFL is watching.
