New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara wasn’t present during voluntary OTAs, and of course, it became a story. With Klint Kubiak taking over as offensive coordinator, there was a bit of concern that Kamara, who is expected to be a focal point of Kubiak’s offense, wasn’t present for the early installation of the offense.

On Tuesday, Kamara was present for mandatory minicamp, and he took some time to talk about missing OTAs, and Kubiak’s new offense. As far as not being present at OTAs, Kamara asked the media if he was in atttenance for OTAs last season, or the season before. The answer is no, and Kamara highlighted that to say this offseason schedule is nothing new for him.

He made it clear, though, that he has been communicating with Klint Kubiak and that he has been studying his playbook, even while away from the team. This preparation has led to excitement for Kamara, because he feels that Kubiak has a very intentional system, that the Saints will benefit from running.

Alvin Kamara says Klint Kubiak’s offense is very intentional

When asked what he likes about the scheme, Alvin Kamara discussed the scheme’s intentionality. He explained that from run looks to pass looks to protection, everything is intentional in the offense. According to Kamara, New Orleans’ offensive players will know what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and when they’re doing it, and that’s something he’s looking forward to.

It will definitely be a good thing if the Saints can operate in that space offensively. Understanding the why is often the next level of knowing a playbook, and when players can really get the most out of a scheme. It allows everyone to execute their individual responsibilities, while playing in harmony with their teammates.

It will, of course, take some time for the Saints offense to all get on the same page, but that’s what training camp is for. The quicker New Orleans gets things figured out, the better chance the team has of contending in 2024.
