4 possible backup quarterbacks for the Saints in 2024

The backup quarterback position is wide open for the New Orleans Saints next year, so here are four candidates that could fill the position behind Derek Carr.

2. Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston’s future in New Orleans isn’t certain. Winston has made it clear that he loves the team, as well as everything about New Orleans. However, he has also made it clear that his desire isn’t to be a backup quarterback. While he would love to remain in New Orleans, he wants to be a starter even more.

Winston may not have that option with the Saints. With Klint Kubiak bringing a new offense in, the team could welcome Winston back and have an open quarterback competition, but that seems unlikely. New Orleans has made it clear that they are building around Carr and are trying to maximize his abilities.

Still, there’s no guarantee that Winston won’t return. Depending on what his market looks like in free agency, he may ultimately remain a Saint.

If the Saints do decide to bring back Winston he would be a great safety net behind Derek Carr. He has lots of experience playing, appearing in 93 games in his career, starting in 80. This past season, there were instances where the offense was stagnant. Derek Carr then got hurt and Winston went in and provided a spark. He is a locker room and a fan favorite. If the Saints can bring back Winston to be the backup quarterback then they should.
