We’ve so often discussed how Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson give the New Orleans Saints potential for one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. The math behind the duo being dangerous is simple on the surface: 2nd team All-Pro + Top-10 pick= explosive. Tyler Shough dug a little deeper and more specifically to highlight a shared trait that separates Olave and Tyson from their peers during a sit down with Chris Long.Â
"He's special because you have, in theory, speed guys or finesse or feel guys, and I think he's the perfect combination of both, where you can run option routes or overs or sails or basics with him, but he's also going to run a go ball or a double move because he has that 4.3 speed. I think that's pretty hard to get as far as where you can run these shorter intermediate routes and have the understanding to settle here in this zone unlike maybe a true 6'5'' X, which is obviously valuable in it's own right. I think he's got that interchangeability. Then, you add in a guy like Jordyn Tyson who's kind of a carbon copy of him when it comes to that feel when it comes to those underneath routes but also big play ability. I think it's going to be pretty unique."
It’s one thing to have one of those receivers, but having two players who can bend styles puts even more pressure on the defense to be nearly perfect. Olave and Tyson can play in every area of the field and can play big if they’re unable to get separation.
Tyler Shough is already becoming a big fan of Jordyn Tyson
Shough added to the praise of Tyson with a few of his traits that aren’t normally discussed. Tyson’s athleticism and knack for big plays is always at the forefront of fans minds. Shough pointed that out, but he also gave credit to Tyson for his intelligence and grittiness.
Shough mentioned how Tyson hasn't messed up a rep all offseason. With all the new information thrown at rookies, it's a testament to his mental ability
Intelligence always becomes forgotten when a player has the athleticism that Tyson has. It's that intelligence that's going to help him early in his career.
The story all offseason was about Tyson's injury history, so you wouldn't think grittiness would be one of the things Shough would mention first. Shough has had his own battles with injuries, so he isn't going to discount Tyson's toughness due to injuries.
Tyson's wide receiver coach Hines Ward tried to tell us about his toughness leading up to the draft. Tyson hadn't been picked by the Saints yet, so it could have sllipped through the cracks. Ward mentioned how while everyone was using Tyson's hamstring against him, Tyson fighting to finish the game on the hamstring told Ward all he needed to know.
Combine the talent with the intangibles of intelligence and grit, the Saints look poised to strike gold with their top-10 pick. Shough certainly isn't slowing down the hype train with the recent praise of Tyson and Olave.
