The well of excuses for the New Orleans Saints to not pick Jordyn Tyson have run dry. The biggest detraction from Tyson were injuries and toughness. His private workout dispelled the injury narrative, and his position coach Hines Ward finds questions of Tyson’s toughness hilarious.
Ward literally laughed at the notion and many of us did as well. Those of us who watched Ward play see the idea of a Hines Ward coaching a soft receiver to be mind boggling. Ward was one of the toughest receivers of his era. You wouldn't assume every receiver under his tutelage would be as tough as him, but you would assume a first round receiver who played under Ward would at least not be soft.
Ward used Tyson’s response to injury as an example to his toughness. Ward wanted to pull Tyson from the game, but Tyson didn’t want to leave his potentially final game early. He then responded with a clutch final drive.
Saints could benefit from questions around Jordyn Tyson
It feels like all of the questions are done with Tyson. Teams had already made their decision on how they felt about the collarbone and ACL injuries. The doubts of his toughness and attitude always felt like smokescreens more than anything else. Smokescreen or not, Saints should hope teams in the first seven picks are buying it.
Tyson called Ward confused on where the questions of his toughness. Ward gave him a valuable lesson on how the NFL works. “One thing about the NFL is a business. Anything they could do to get you at a cheaper rate, they're going to do it.”
Ward is spot on and we see this regularly. This could work in the Saints’ advantage. They don’t need everyone to feel this way or have these reservations. They just need a team or two to pass on Tyson or pick Carnell Tate first. Teams buying it feels a long shot but it could just take one doubt for the Saints to have the choice to pick Tyson.
