It's going to be difficult to keep Jayden Price in the small box he's currently in. He's currently backing up Jonas Sanker in Brandon Staley's coveted STAR role, but Price has made enough of an impact to see if there's other ways for him to contribute. That's why the New Orleans Saints should consider getting Price some reps on the boundary, especially when factoring in Isaac Yiadom's struggles.
Price has strung together enough good performances in practice to start earning some first team reps, though Sanker's job security isn't in question. Price then built on that performance by snagging an interception against the Jaguars. Just like he earned first team reps, he's earned an opportunity to work in at outside cornerback.
It's not an unfamiliar role for Price either. He was an outside cornerback for North Dakota State and also for the Arlington Renegades in the UFL. This would be a return to Price's roots, and cross-training him on the inside and outside gives the defensive back ability to step in at multiple positions.
Jayden Price could make Isaac Yiadom even more expendable
Yiadom has been making himself expendable all on his own, but it's different when there's a replacement in reach. The Saints aren't going to walk into the season without 4 boundary corners. They already have two starters in Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley, and Martin Emerson has played well as he returns from a season ending injury.
No other outside cornerback has made a strong claim for the fourth cornerback spot, including the incumbent Yiadom. It's been a disappointing offseason for the cornerback. He was supposed to be a reason the Saints cornerback room had strong depth.
That hasn't been the case. Instead, Yiadom has been the victim of multiple standout plays in the rise of Barion Bown. He had an equally poor showing in the preseason game.
Insert Jayden Price. He's been killing in on the inside, and his background is on the boundary. Let's see if old habits die hard for Price.
As a member of the Renegades, Price led the UFL in pass breakups and finished with three interceptions. The Saints aren't looking for a starting corner, just a player who can be solid depth. Price looks like a player who could be that and more at STAR, so it would be at least interesting to see if the same could be said on the boundary.
Yiadom's value comes on special teams, but Price checks that box too. He's looked good in kick coverage, and Price is also a returner. He took a snap as a punt returner in the last preseason game and was second in the UFL in punt return yardage in 2025.
Honestly, it feels like Price is making the roster based on his special teams and defensive performance. This would be the cherry on top for him, but the Saints do need to see if they can improve at their cornerback depth. If Price is able to be that, that's one more roster spot the Saints get to save and use elsewhere.
