Jonas Sanker is the New Orleans Saints starting STAR, and he's looked good in the few days of training camp we've had so far. Behind him is Jayden Price, and he hasn't looked to shabby himself. He's already shaping up to be an early candidate for the Saints' 2026 training camp darling.

There's always that one player that no one expects that looks good in training camp, and Price certainly checks the box of player that no one is expecting. So far, he's been impressive in one of the most important positions on Brandon Staley's defense. The Saints cornerback room is pretty stacked, but Price is doing his best to standout in the early portions of camp.

Jayden Price has a long path to the Saints 53 man roster

Is being the backup STAR enough to make the roster? Probably not but it is a fantastic way to kick the door open. Price is going to have to play special teams in order to make the roster, but his contributions on defense give him a unique value as well.

If Price shows he can be a contributor to the team on special teams and he continues to make plays as the STAR on the second unit, he may just carve his role to the roster. That gives him two ways to influence the game.

One thing fighting against Price making the initial 53 man roster is he is a player who is more than likely making it through the waiver wire. Because it is probable that Price is able to make it to the practice squad, that may be exactly what the Saints do.

The Saints could bank on stashing Price on the practice squad and pulling him to the active roster if necessary. It's hard to argue against that thought process because of the likelihood around it.

It'd be a calculated gamble that could get another bubble player with a more immediate role on the roster. STAR isn't necessarily a rotation heavy position, so that may allow for a player on the defensive line or extra wide receiver to make the roster.
