Ty Chandler made a statement on the very first play of New Orleans Saints preseason, and that set the tone for what was a solid debut for the team. The Saints sat their starters, so we got a chance to see some of the training camp darlings, such as Barion Brown and Jayden Price.
Though they fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars, there were still some players who stood out in what felt like an overall positive performance. It felt like many of the things we've seen in practice translated to the game, aside from Spencer Rattler's strong camp.
Below, I’ve listed six players, four of whom are “winners” from Saturday’s game and two “losers”. It’s important to note that a player’s stock rising/falling doesn’t indicate they are a lock to make/miss the roster. Practices will be more important to coaches, but there's something to be said for live action performances.
Ty Chandler's special teams prowess makes him an intriguing contender for the 53-man roster.
Ty Chandler
Ty Chandler isn’t vying for a running back spot; instead, he’s fighting for a special teams position, which he capitalized on against the Jaguars. Chandler had an 86-yard opening kickoff return that set the Saints up for an instant touchdown. He made a fabulous impression on the coaching staff that bodes well for his future.
Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson looked better than Spencer Rattler on Saturday. The former second-overall pick showcased his arm and efficiency, going 11/16 for 145 yards and one touchdown. He had the offense humming and played well in rhythm. Wilson is still behind Rattler in the depth chart, but he’s making the battle interesting.
Bub Means
Most Saints fans had forgotten about Bub Means after two injury-riddled seasons. However, he displayed his talent and potential with four receptions for 77 yards. He must stay healthy and consistent, but Means is a dark-horse contender for the 53-man roster if he continues at this pace.
Jayden Price
The Saints’ cornerback room lacks depth, which gives Jayden Price an opportunity to exhibit his impact and potential. With this opportunity, he thrived, snatching an interception and racking up two pass deflections against the Jaguars. He’s not guaranteed to make the roster yet, but he’s trending in the right direction.
Charlie Smyth leads the disappointing prospects.

Charlie Smyth is falling behind in the kicker battle after a subpar performance, missing his lone field goal attempt (52 yards). He did make both of his extra points, but the damage is already done. Tanner Smith will keep pulling away unless the Irishman quickly improves.
Isaac Yiadom
Isaac Yiadom was picked on early in the game against the Jaguars. Additionally, he struggled after the catch and couldn’t bring down his receiver. As a result, his position as a depth piece is questionable, and he’s fighting for his life on the roster.
