Cam Jordan is one of the greatest New Orleans Saints of all time, and there's a strong argument that he's on the franchise's Mount Rushmore. As we embark upon what will likely be Jordan's last season, he only has one request for the Saints when he's gone. Don't give 94 away to a scrub... and maybe wait a while before anyone gets it.
Being protective over jersey numbers has become a bit of a thing. Laquon Treadwell isn't giving Keenan Allen no. 13, and the Jayden Daniels-LSU situation became a running joke for weeks. However, no one is going oppose Jordan's request for the Saints to be stingy with his number because of his importance and the number's legacy.
Only six Saints in franchise history have worn no 94, and two players only played one game a piece in 2010. Other than that, Jordan, Charles Grant, Joe Johnson and Jim Wilks were all highly productive players. Though they wore the number consecutively, with no years in between, Jordan wants the Saints to break that trend and wait until there's a star on the way to New Orleans.
The Saints could do Cam Jordan this one favor
There's only two numbers that will never be touched again. No one will ever wear no. 9 after Drew Brees, and Archie Manning will be the last Saint with 8 on their back. Luckily, Jordan isn't asking for the Saints to go that far.
Jordan actually wants someone to wear 94, but he wants someone deserving to wear it. "I don't want just a kid on the number. I want a guy. When I leave this building, don't give it to undrafted free agent that is going to be in and out the door."
Jordan took it a step further, as well, to the point where he's selective of what kind of draft pick he wants to have the number next. He doesn't want "this third round guy we have some potential for. Give me a hero."
The legend told the Saints, "in fact, hold the number back for a couple years and be like 'hey, we got a certified dawg on the way. Him!"
There's two legendary former Saints wide receivers you could point back to. Jordan wants to be treated nothing like how the Saints handled Michael Thomas and slightly better than they treated Marques Colston's no. 12.
The Saints gave 13 away immediately to Equanimeous St. Brown of all people. The next year they gave it to Ja'Lynn Polk who was going to sit out the entire season, and Velus Jones Jr.
Chris Olave may wear 12 now, but there was a couple of less than stellar wide receivers to wear the number between him and Colston. However, the Saints did wait a few years before reissuing the number. Maybe it was out of respect or coincidence; either way, it happened.
That's what Jordan is looking for, except skip the Marquez Calloway and go straight to Olave. And Jordan has earned the right for no one to wear 94 for a while, especially when you factor in that the number has a history of quality players.
