Not only did Cam Jordan sign a contract to come back to the New Orleans Saints, he also announced that 2026 would be his final season in the NFL. He's long expressed the desire to play for one organization, like his father did. Mission accomplished
Cam's dad, Steve Jordan, played 13 years for the Minnesota Vikings. Years later, Cam Jordan is able to follow suit in New Orleans. By playing another season, Jordan also becomes the most tenured player in Saints history, passing up Drew Brees.
Jordan understands what this declaration means. "I'm definitely going to take to this like every game is my last, every play," Jordan told reporters. The truth is, it very well could be, and fans should view it that way as well.
Cam Jordan has the potential to make history on his retirement tour
It's rare that defensive linemen play as long as Jordan, and when they do, it's typically with multiple teams. Prioritizing staying with the Saints for another season puts him in position to make NFL history. With 10 sacks, Jordan will set a new record for the most sacks with a singular franchise.
The two players who are at the top of the list ironically both played for the New York Giants. Lawrence Taylor played for 13 years, but sacks weren't an official stat in his rookie year. He finished with 132.5 sacks in those next 12 seasons. Jordan has nearly equaled that figure. He finished last season with 132 sacks. It feels pretty safe to predict Jordan will pass that number in 2026.
Jordan will have a more difficult time surpassing Michael Strahan. Strahan had 141.5 sacks in 15 years. It may take Jordan one extra year, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility to think Jordan could pass him up. It really just comes down to the same question many have wondered since the end of the season.
Was Cam Jordan's 2025 campaign a flash in the pan, or was it the product of being in a system that fits him?
If the latter is the truth, we may see Jordan snatch the record. He had 10.5 sacks last year, and he'll need to basically do it again to overtake Strahan. With Myles Garrett playing for the Rams this year, T.J. Watt is the only player who will come close to breaking the record for a long time if Jordan can't get it done.
On the same historical note, Jordan would jump to sixth all time in sacks if he surpasses Strahan. If he records just 6.5, Jordan will finish his career top-10 in NFL history in sacks. The Saints legend is back for one last run, and he could see his legendary career end with NFL history and/or with a standing as one of the 10 best in history to bring down the passer.
