The New Orleans Saints are starting a new chapter in franchise history during the 2025 offseason. That chapter is starting with a coaching search. Soon, New Orleans will hire a new coach, and then they’ll build the roster for this next era of Saints football.
Currently, the roster is filled with older, high-paid players. While established stars and veteran leadership is great for every roster, it’s typically not ideal for that to be the roster makeup of a rebuilding team. That’s why there’s questions about if Derek Carr will return, if veteran defensive end Cam Jordan has played his final down in New Orleans, and if the franchise will say farewell to several franchise pillars this offseason.
Every thing will unfold in the coming months, but NFL analysts are already making their predictions. Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton recently joined in on that, predicting the biggest trades that could shape the 2025 offseason. One of the trades listed was Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu being sent to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Saints predicted to trade Tyrann Mathieu to Chargers
Moton has New Orleans getting a fifth-round pick back in this deal, and believes the trade could be a part of the Saints journey to get under the salary cap. With Mathieu still producing at a high level, the belief is that playoff-caliber teams will be interested in acquiring him.
"Playoff-caliber teams may value Mathieu's leadership qualities, experience on a Super Bowl-winning team and his elite ball production. He could be one of the missing pieces to a squad trying to open its title-contending window."Maurice Moton (Bleacher Report)
This is a possible move that is realistic. As loyal as New Orleans has been in recent years, there isn’t much belief that all of the key veterans will be back, although they are under contract. The Saints moved Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline, and that was likely just the start.
The question, though, is if Mathieu wants to play elsewhere. In recent years, he has talked about how much it means to be playing at home as his career winds down. If the Saints tell him they’re planning to move him, he could just decide to retire. That’ll be something to monitor as well in the offseason.
