After a strong week 1 performance in which he  entered the game as a backup, Zach Wilson got the start in the New Orleans Saints second preseason game but delivered a disappointing performance. Wilson played four drives, and none resulted in points.  He finished the afternoon 6 out of 12 for only 55 yards and an interception, and his possessions ended with a punt, interception, turnover on downs, and another punt.

Wilson had a prime opportunity to build on his impressive preseason debut and potentially put himself firmly in the drivers seat for the back up quarterback job.  Instead, the performance against the Los Angeles Rams did little to strengthen his case in a competition that remains wide open.

The Saints gave him an opportunity by handing him the keys as a starter this game, giving him the opportunity to separate himself from Spencer Rattler.  Instead, a poor performance allowed Rattler to remain alive in the conversation.

Zach Wilson leaves door open for Spencer Rattler to reclaim QB2 spot

It will be difficult to see Zach Wilson start in the preseason finale after this performance, making this last match extremely important. After being given the chance to take control of the battle, he left the door door open for Spencer Rattler., who now has an opportunity to regain some momentum heading into the final week of the preseason.

That leaves Wilson with just one more game to change the narrative.  He showed in Week 1 that he could make a compelling case for the job, but now he needs to prove that wasn’t an outlier. With roster decisions approaching, there is very little time left for Wilson to make another statement, especially after failing to produce points against the Rams.

The margin for error is very slim, and Wilson can’t afford another disappointing outing if he wants to overtake Rattler.  It isn't just the backup quarterback role Wilson is playing for either. It wouldn't be surprising to see Wilson get cut if he isn't able to beat out Rattler.

If Wilson wants to walk away as the backup quarterback or a spot on the roster, the final preseason game will likely be his final chance to make the Saints believe he’s the best option for the role. He'll need to deliver a performance that gives the Saints a reason to overlook his latest setback and bring back signs from his week 1 preseason performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
