Spencer Rattler’s stock took a massive dip after the New Orleans Saints preseason game. He was thoroughly outplayed by Zach Wilson, and most importantly, Rattler greatly damaged the trade stock Saints fans hoped he would build in the preseason.
It's only three bites at the apple in the preseason. Rattler had been having a fantastic training camp, but teams aren't privy to everything happening in camp. What they get to see are the three preseason games, and Rattler was less than stellar in his first showcase.
Rattler complete 8 of his 11 attempts but only averaged 3.8 yards per attempt. He never pushed the ball downfield and had a bad fumble on a dropback where he should have thrown the ball away. It simply wasn't good, and Rattler may not have the luxury of having any bad preseason games.
Spencer Rattler has 2 concerns now and one is already with the Saints
Rattler is stuck in a position where he has no mobility to become the Saints starting quarterback. There aren't any destination he'll have that role, but there are places with much more room to grow than New Orleans.
The best case scenario for Rattler is finding himself in one of those types of scenarios. No one is calling the Saints after Saturday's performance. If anything, it would build apprehension of whether or not Rattler is worth even the low level investment it'll take to get him in the building.
Fans were looking to see Rattler's training camp transition into a potential trade. Saturday dealt a heavy blow to that aspiration. Instead, it was Zach Wilson getting people talking about a potential trade.
It could be too late for Rattler's trade stock, or maybe I'm just a prisoner of the moment, but that's the secondary concern. As we laid out earlier, Wilson flat out outplayed Rattler. It's not a battle now, but it could be very soon.
Wilson has done enough to warrant taking some of the second team snaps from Rattler. Some fans are calling for a full out switch, but that's not happening. Wilson isn't going to straight up take a spot that wasn't even in competition a week ago, though it'll be fascinating to see if he gets a start in one of these preseason games.
That's where Rattler is now. He's gone from being the Saints' for sure backup and potential trade chip to fighting to keep his role behind Tyler Shough in one game. The pressure is on Rattler once again to perform.
