The New Orleans Saints have another quarterback battle this year, but instead of Spencer Rattler competing with Tyler Shough, he'll go toe to toe with Zach Wilson. The Saints are more than familiar with how important backup quarterback is, so this shouldn't be a competition to take lightly. For Rattler, this battle could be turned into a potential starting role elsewhere.
Rattler infamously only won one game, but the flashes of talent were there. Wilson won more games over his career, but he fell firmly on his face the last time we saw him. Each player has talent that hasn't been reached, and that's what makes this battle so interesting.
Rattler, of course, has to first beat out Wilson, but there is an opportunity for greener pastures if he gets that done.
Spencer Rattler is playing to make the Saints trade him
Having Rattler in New Orleans is great for the Saints. He has a lot of potential as a backup who could step in as a starter in a pinch. He has experience doing it in this system, so the team knows what he looks like in Kellen Moore's system.
As great as it is for the team, it's quite limiting for Rattler. As long as he's in New Orleans, he'll never get past Tyler Shough. The goal for him now is to get somewhere that allows him to chance to start again.
That's why the preseason will be so important for Rattler. If the Saints take a similar approach to last season, Shough and the starting unit won't see the field much. Rattler and Wilson will likely both get a half to play each game.
Rattler has to take advantage of the opportunity, because it's essentially an audition for any team with uncertainty in their quarterback room. Rattler will have more room to showcase his talents, and he's likely already on the radar.
Rattler didn't win many games, but he did flash some talent that could be refined. No one is predicting him to be the next Sam Darnold, but a strong preseason could make a team wonder what they can get out of the young quarterback.
The mission and the battle go hand in hand. If Rattler is able to make a team question that, then he handled business in his battle against Wilson. If he doesn't handle the latter then the former isn't possible.
The Saints won't just give Rattler away for nothing. He's a valuable asset to the team, but the right price could change that. How high a team is willing to go is solely based on how Rattler performs in the preseason.
