The New Orleans Saints could be a team to watch if the Denver Broncos decide to pursue an upgrade at backup quarterback. With Spencer Rattler being demoted to Tyler Shough midseason, the Saints could be willing to listen to trade inquiries.

The Broncos could be in the market for a more reliable backup quarterback after their offense struggled to find any rhythm in a 10-7 AFC Championship Game loss to the New England Patriots. The issue became glaring after starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a fractured right ankle, exposing a lack of depth behind the Broncos young signal caller.

That situation in New Orleans may also be shaped by their confidence in Shough, whom the Saints appear to view as their long-term franchise option. The Saints could be more open to moving a younger backup like Rattler, especially if a team like the Broncos comes calling with interest.

Spencer Rattler brings intriguing backup potential to Denver Broncos

Spencer Rattler’s starting experience is one of the reasons he could make sense for the Broncos.  While his opportunities with the Saints did not result in a great deal of success, he has valuable game reps under his belt.  If an injury were to sideline Bo Nix for a short period, Rattler has shown he can step in and manage an offense, and keep a team competitive while the starter recovers.

Rattler has also flashed enough potential to remain an intriguing developmental quarterback. He won a quarterback competition during training camp and earned opportunities because of his talent and arm strength. Although Rattler is still refining his game, there have been moments that suggest there is more upside to unlock than what his early results may indicate.

At just 26 years old, Rattler would give Denver a young backup with room to grow.  Rather than keeping a quarterback who has shown limited ability to consistently generate offense, the Broncos could add a quarterback who can continue to develop behind Pro Bowl signal caller Bo Nix.  Working in Sean Payton’s system and learning behind one of the league's rising young quarterbacks could help Rattler take the next step in his career while providing Denver with valuable depth at the position.
