3 WR trade targets for the Saints after missing out on Davante Adams
By Ryan Heckman
Tuesday morning, news broke of the New York Jets completing a trade for Davante Adams, reuniting him with his former quarterback and longtime friend, Aaron Rodgers.
Of course, the New Orleans Saints were in on a possible Adams trade due to the fact that quarterback Derek Carr has a longstanding relationship with the former All Pro wide receiver, too. But, the Jets were the ones to get the deal done.
Now, with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed banged up, the Saints are even more in need of help at the receiver position. Whether or not it's Carr under center, this offense needs depth. You could make an argument that with Spencer Rattler expected to make a few starts, that's even more reason to go get another weapon.
Without Adams available, there are still some options for the Saints to consider.
Top wide receiver trade targets for the Saints prior to this year's deadline
Honorable mention: DeAndre Hopkins, TEN
The Titans aren't going anywhere this season at 1-4 and DeAndre Hopkins is a free agent in 2025. If the Saints think there's a chance they'll compete and want to take a flier, Hopkins isn't a bad option. He just can't be the focal point anymore, at this point of his career.
More Saints news:
Mike Williams, NYJ
One obvious trade candidate, now that Adams is a Jet, is the guy who probably takes a back seat. Mike Williams is now likely to be the Jets' fourth wide receiver because Garrett Wilson is still the obvious no. 2 and Allen Lazard is one of Aaron Rodgers' favorites, so those two aren't taking a significant reduction in playing time.
Williams is another who would be a one-year rental, and makes sense for the Saints if Rashid Shaheed misses significant time. He's a deep threat, which is something they'd be missing without Shaheed.
Darius Slayton, NYG
Seemingly every year, New York Giants wideout Darius Slayton is mentioned in trade rumors. He's been as consistent as a WR2 or WR3 as you could ask for during most of his career, as he's posted over 700 receiving yards in four of five seasons and is well on his way to doing so again.
With the emergence of Wan'Dale Robinson and the obvious no. 1 in Malik Nabers, Slayton might actually get dealt this year.
Amari Cooper, CLE
Finally, and maybe the most attractive target for the Saints, could be Amari Cooper. The Cleveland Browns are also headed no where fast, and will be selling Cooper to the highest bidder. His contract is as feasible to trade as anyone's, and the Saints would pay him less than $1 million the rest of the season.
Still a clear, no. 1 wide receiver, Cooper would help this offense immediately and, with a healthy Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, could make things a whole lot more fun on that side of the ball once Derek Carr is back. Heck, even with Spencer Rattler, it gives the young passer some options.
