During the New Orleans Saints' match-up versus the Buffalo Bills, fourth-year veteran Rashid Shaheed was given both touches on the ground and targets in the air. Shaheed is a dynamic player who should be a focal point in the Saints offense. Seeing him get more rushing attempts is a way to make that happen.
Also being the primary return man there's no question Shaheed had the opportunities to make a big difference in the loss to the Bills. Seeing the wide receiver get his first two carries of the season gives a glimpse into what could be a sign of things to come in Kellen Moore's offense.
Finishing Sunday with the most catches along with the most receiving yards for New Orleans, Shaheed saw a more prominent role than he has in the first three games. He may not be the top option in either aspect of offense, but Shaheed is a dangerous player to opposing defenses.
Rashid Shaheed should be the next Kellen Moore wide receiver used in the run game
When speaking on the Saints' ability to run the ball, most conversations begin and end with just the running back position, but as the game continues to evolve, we see more franchises making additions to the ground game with receivers.
Head coach Kellen Moore has never shied away from getting receivers involved in the run game in his previous years as an OC. In Dallas, CeeDee Lamb saw double digit rushing attempts in two of three seasons. Derius Davis had 14 attempts in Moore's only season with the Chargers.
Shaheed has never seen more than 7 carries in a season. He's the Saints punt returner and electric with the ball in his hands. There's a lot of attention on the lack of deep shots to Shaheed. Giving him easy touches like jet sweeps is another way he can generate big plays by utilizing skills that made him an All-Pro return specialist.
Giving more opportunities on the ground to Shaheed the Saints' ability to spread to the field and find the endzone will be inevitable, and with hosting the New York Giants Sunday, don't be surprised to find offensive triumph both in the air and on the ground by Shaheed.
