Questions about Taysom Hill’s future have been prevalent for New Orleans Saints fans, but he just ended the speculation by releasing a statement saying he won’t be returning. This is a crushing blow to fans, but it’s coming at the perfect time: both for the team’s and his future.
“I’ve taken time this offseason to think carefully about what comes next for my family and me. I still don’t have a clear answer about what the future holds, but I know that returning to New Orleans is not in the cards,” Hill wrote. “As training camp begins, I didn’t want my silence to be misinterpreted, and as hard as it is to put into words, I wanted to express my gratitude.”
Hill’s return was always a long shot, especially after second-year quarterback Hunter Dekkers wore number seven, Hill’s old number, to training camp. But now, there’s no more guessing as the Saints will be without his talent in 2026.
Taysom Hill is a franchise legend, but it was time to hang up the cleats.
Hill will always be highly regarded among the Saints community. Nobody in NFL history had his level of versatility and skill at multiple positions. This, paired with his love for the city, made him easy to root for and a clear fan favorite. There won’t ever be another player of his archetype in Saints, nay, NFL history.
Despite this, it was time for him to call it quits. Hill, the 35-year-old utility player, was an unrestricted free agent after 2026, and it didn’t make financial sense to bring him back.
Hill tore his ACL in 2024, and didn't bounce back with a productive season last year. He only racked up 262 total yards, the lowest total of his career. The injury seemed to take a step or two away from Hill.
Although it hurts now, Taysom Hill leaving solidifies his status in New Orleans Saints history as one of the most well-liked, versatile, and unique players. He hung up the cleats at the perfect time, ending the speculation and allowing the team to focus on their season while he finds his future.
