Mickey Loomis all but sealed Taysom Hill’s fate while talking to the media Monday morning. There’s 3 members of the 2025 New Orleans Saints whose future with the team next season still feels unclear: Alvin Kamara, Cameron Jordan and Hill. Of the three, Hill has always felt like the least likely to return. It’s always felt that way and Loomis’ comments feel like confirmation.Â
When talking to the media, Loomis made it clear that the door is open for a Jordan return because there’s a contract on the table. There is no contract currently on the table for Hill. Conventional wisdom would say that’s a sign the Saints aren’t looking to bring Hill back, and it’s hard to see it any differently.Â
It was odd to hear Loomis be so blunt on the situation, as true as it may be. It was still surprising for him to not choose to simply talk around the answer
Taysom Hill is likely considering retirement
Loomis added that Hill’s situation requires more conversation. You have to wonder what’s the conversation about. It’s the middle of May, and the Saints haven’t extended a contract offer to Hill yet. Conversation at this point is usually related to finding a middle ground on compensation or duration of the contract.Â
By Loomis’ words, there’s no middle ground to find. The Saints haven’t established terms on which they’d like to bring Hill back. Even a low ball offer starts the conversation. With no news of Hill being connected anywhere else, you have to wonder if Hill will play anywhere next season.Â
Hill is an older player coming off a season where he was noticeably less effective. He’ll turn 36 before the season starts, and it’s unlikely that he catches a second wind a year and a half after an ACL injury.Â
These are reasons for Hill to call it quits, but he has to ultimately agree with those reasons. He wouldn’t be the first player to hold on longer than he should. The only conversation that makes sense at this juncture is discussing if Hill wants to play.Â
