The New Orleans Saints returned from their bye week on Sunday, and they looked like the team they were in the first half of the season. Not the team that had two separate two-game winning streaks, but the team that lost seven games in a row. The Saints played some bad football and they suffered some key injuries.

Taysom Hill, Nick Saldiveri, and Tyrann Mathieu all left the game early on Sunday. Mathieu, who is still leading the New Orleans defense in his 11th season, left the game in the second half after making a tackle. He spent several minutes in the blue tent on the sideline, then came out of it with one of his arms heavily wrapped.

The team announced it as a shoulder injury, and initially listed Mathieu as questionable to return, but he never got back in the game.

In his absence, New Orleans ultimately lost 21-14, and dropped to 4-8. Now, the team will try to rebound while Mathieu tries to get healthy for the final five games of the season.

Like many players in New Orleans this year, Mathieu has battled several injuries all season, but he hasn’t missed a game yet. While his name has frequently popped up on the injury report, he has started all 12 games, entering Sunday’s action with three interceptions, 43 tackles, six pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

This season hasn’t gone the way Mathieu, or anyone in New Orleans hoped it would, but the veteran safety would definitely want to get back on the field this year to finish the season with his team. With his football career nearing an end, he has repeatedly made it clear how much playing at home means to him. It’d be a shame if he has to sit on the sideline for anymore of those games.
