It’s been a long season for the New Orleans Saints, as they have lost several key players to injuries. Star running back Alvin Kamara has resiliently stayed on the field, but unfortunately, the significant injury bug has finally caught up to him as well.
After suffering a groin injury on a touchdown catch in Week 15, the fear is now that the veteran running back could be done for the year. On Thursday, interim head coach Darren Rizzi admitted to the media that Kamara’s injury is more significant than the team initially thought.
Shortly after Rizzi’s comments, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the groin injury is still be evaluated but it’s very possible that the veteran running back is done for the season.
Alvin Kamara’s injury could be season ending
This isn’t the first injury Kamara has dealt with this year, but it is the first one to sideline him. This season, the star running back has played through a broken hand, broken ribs, and a hip injury. Unfortunately, the groin injury could be too much to play through.
This update is especially disheartening because Kamara has been having a special year. While the Saints have been struggling, sitting at 5-9 entering Week 16, Kamara was putting together his most productive season to date. In 14 games, he has a career-high 950 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns, and 68 receptions for 543 yards and two additional touchdowns.
Kamara also became the franchise’s leading rusher this season, and was on pace to reach 1000 rushing yards in a single season for the first time in his career. Him possibly being done for the season now makes that unlikely.
However, Kamara isn’t throwing in the towel, and who would expect him to. Nick Underhill reports that the team captain intends to take the field again before the season is over. It’s only three games left in the year, so it will be a lot of work, but he’s committed to trying.
The good thing is that Kamara signed a two-year extension with the Saints earlier this offseason. Entering the year, he was scheduled to be a free agent after this season, but this isn’t how Kamara’s time in New Orleans is going to end.
