Calling Tommy Mellott the next Taysom Hill would be an unfairly lofty expectation to place upon Mellott. However, the New Orleans Saints' latest addition to the practice squad has traits that make it impossible to not think about Mellott becoming that kind of player.

All across the nation, players from plenty of rosters, both college and professional, are shuffled to new teams, and the Saints new acquisition is gaining a lot of attention after their most recent signing. But to some surprise, the player who's been compared to one of the most versatile players in the league isn't a market-shattering type of signing but an addition to the practice squad.

Hill is widely recognized for his ability to not just play but perform at a high level at multiple positions. Comparisons to Hill indicates that the new acquisition to the practice squad is a threat throwing, receiving, and rushing.

The comparisons are unfair but inevitable for Tommy Mellott

Tommy Mellott, a product of Montana State, brings a lot of potential to New Orleans, who is known for utilizing unique talents in ways other franchises wouldn't. Although play QB in college, Mellott will be with the wide receivers on the practice squad.

A transition in positions the NFL rarely sees, Mellott's production on the ground and ability to make plays is undeniable after finishing his last 4 collegiate seasons with 3,517 rushing yards paired with 43 touchdowns on the ground. Catching the ball will be the place Mellott has the most to prove, along with blocking.

If the transition between positions goes smoothly, the Saints may have found themselves another Swiss Army knife for Kellen Moore and his staff to utilize. Mellott brings abilities in all three phases of moving the football. Given time to develop on the practice squad, Mellott could be used similarly to Hill.

Just being drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Tommy Mellott has a lot to prove before he can realistically compare himself to Taysom Hill. However, if Mellott's talents are developed in the receiving game, he maintains his skills on the ground and is mixed in to throw the ball occasionally, the Saints may have very well watched the next Taysom Hill fall right in their lap.
