It sounds the wait to see New Orleans Saints top-10, rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson will have to wait until at least Week 6. Tyson’s mandated 4 weeks on injured reserve comes to a close after the Monday Night Football showdown vs the Atlanta Falcons, but Kellen Moore told the media the team doesn’t anticipate Tyson will practice next week.

No practice means no game, and most importantly, Tyson not practicing may suggest a return isn’t close. After four weeks on injured reserve, teams can activate a practice window that gives the player three weeks to return live action before having to go back injured reserve if they can’t play. No need to waste a week of activation if Tyson isn’t ready to practice.

Moore left room for something to change next week, but expend your optimism wisely. Moore usually gives no answer, so him saying that’s not the expectation says a lot. Moore could be disguising a big surprise, but it’s also far from dire if Tyson doesn’t return to practice next week

The sky isn’t falling just because Jordyn Tyson isn’t practicing yet

Tyson not practicing next week is disappointing but not surprising. Injured reserve comes with its own timeline for a potential return, but that was always far from a guarantee. The wide receiver’s initial timetable for return was about two months, and we still haven’t reached 8 weeks yet.

Tyson could still be on track for his original timeline. Him not practicing next week would just say he’s not ahead of schedule. The key word in that timeline was “about” and not “at least.”

“About” gives a bit of range with 8 weeks being a benchmark, while leaving room for less time. “At least” would have set a floor of no less than two months. With Tyson’s history of hamstring injuries, I always treated 8 weeks as the minimum, even if that’s pessimistic.

The cautious approach the Saints have taken to Tyson’s injury all offseason would lend itself to the team not rushing him back. If you take the bar at 8 weeks, the receiver could be ready to practice after next week’s game.

The next aspect to watch would be how much of a ramp up process do the Saints give him. When Tyson returned from a lengthy time off in the offseason, he looked explosive immediately.

If that’s the case again, we could see Tyson return the same week he’s activated. It’s equally possible that they give him a week or two of practice time to get his feet underneath him. Tyson has to be activated before we get to any of that, and unless Moore is pulling the wool over our eyes, that’s at least a week and a half away.
