Jordyn Tyson was one of the highlights from the second day of New Orleans Saints training camp. Tyler Shough hitting Tyson for a touchdown was one of the standout moments from Day 2. Quietly, this is one of the hidden benefits of Chris Olave holding in to get a new contract.
Shough and Tyson get to get extra time to cultivate a relationship that'll be instrrumental to the offense's success in 2026. With Olave out temporarily, Tyson is the clear top option on the field at all times. Defenses will likely hone in on Olave early, so this could be a bit of a peek into the future for Tyson's usage.
When you see Tyson on the field, he just looks different than the other receivers on the field. His twitchiness stands out even in individual drills, and he has an elusiveness that hasn't been a big part of the receiving corps. Those individual traits is why the Saints drafted Tyson in the top 10, and the chemistry with Shough will allow those traits to flourish.
Jordyn Tyson gets more time to work with Tyler Shough
Tyson and Shough is a new connection that also didn't have much time to build chemistry this offseason. Because the Saints opted to take a cautious approach to Tyson's health, the duo didn't get a chance to build that on field chemistry as much during organized team activities and minicamp.
Olave being on the field wouldn't prevent Shough and Tyson from forming a connection, but Olave not being on the field does give a little more time for Shough and Tyson to work together. Thursday was a good example of that. At times, it felt like there was a concerted effort to get Tyson the ball, and there should be.
Olave can afford to miss some time in team drills with Shough. They already have a season under their belt, and the year yielded some positive results, to say the least. Missing a few reps in team drills isn't going to hurt either of them.
Honing in on Tyson is the way to make the most of Olave's time away. The rookie is going to be a pivotal part of this offense from Day 1, so building a connection early is vital. These extra reps will help build that familiarity.
