The Saints are close to landing a two-time Super Bowl-winning receiver
The New Orleans Saints need a lot of help. Not only have they lost five straight games, the team has lost key players to major injuries. Just recently, New Orleans lost cornerback Paulson Adebo and wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to season-ending injuries.
The Saints have depth at corner, so Adebo will be replaced by rookie defensive back Kool-Aid McKinstry. On the other hand, New Orleans is extremely thin at wide receiver, so the team will need to look outside the building to adequately replace Shaheed.
The Saints have started that process, hosting veteran wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a visit on Monday.
Saints host wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a visit
Marquez Valdes-Scantling is currently in the seventh season of his career. The veteran receiver has played with three teams, and he has experienced a lot of success in this league. Starting his career with the Green Bay Packers, Valdes-Scantling got to play with Aaron Rodgers before moving on to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
In Kansas City, the veteran receiver helped the Chiefs win two Super Bowls. However, he moved on to the Buffalo Bills this past offseason, but was recently released by the Bills after they traded for Amari Cooper.
Throughout his seven years, Valdes-Scantling has been consistently productive, recording two seasons with more than 600 yards, and five with more than 400. He also has big-play ability, leading the league with 20.9 yards a catch back in 2020.
Big plays are exactly what Rashid Shaheed provided the Saints, so it would be great if Valdes-Scantling can replicate that even a little. The season is quickly slipping away for New Orleans, and the team knows the wide receiver room needs to be better if things are going to get turned around.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling wouldn’t be an explosive signing, and he wouldn’t solve all of New Orleans’ problems. However, he certainly would help a really thin receiver room.
