Reports have emerged that Kellen Moore wasn’t initially thrilled about the Saints job

The New Orleans Saints have had trouble finding candidates interested in their head coaching job, including Kellen Moore, who remains in the search.

With the way things currently stand, all signs point to Kellen Moore being the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints. As the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, Moore can’t be hired until after the Super Bowl; that’s why it seems like he’s the guy New Orleans wants, because the team could have already hired the other candidates in the coaching search.

The Saints have seemingly arrived on Moore after what appeared to be a humbling coaching search. Several candidates refused in-person interviews with the Saints, highlighting the way the job is viewed through the league. Whether it be New Orleans’ horrendous cap situation, the aging roster, or Mickey Loomis— possibly all three —head coach of the Saints isn’t considered a good position right now.

Turns out, Kellen Moore, the likely favorite for the job now, also thought the same thing. NFL insider Dianna Rusinni recently revealed this on an episode of the Scoop City podcast. According to Rusinni, there were talks about if Moore was actually interested in the job, because he viewed New Orleans’ quarterback situation as concerning.

However, Rusinni went on to say that he has come around on the job, as the Saints understand the next head coach will have a multi-year rebuild on their hands.

Kellen Moore reportedly had to “come around” on the idea of being Saints head coach

Kellen Moore coming around on the idea is ultimately all that matters. As long as he doesn’t get cold feet at any point in the process, and New Orleans actually hires him, everything else would be water under the bridge. From that point, Moore would be fully committed to turning the Saints around.

Rusinni’s point about New Orleans having patience with their next coach has been an understated point as everyone talks about the quality of the Saints’ opening. There’s no denying the position has several factors that make it a tough job, however, New Orleans is historically patient, and that’s a good thing for first-time head coaches.

As long as the franchise can guarantee to Kellen Moore that he’ll have time and resources to turn things around, the Saints should be able to close the deal with him.
