In recent days, it has become clear that Kellen Moore was the top remaining candidate to be the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints. With several guys pulling their names out of the search, Moore was the name that made the most sense. Now, the Saints have all but confirmed this to be true.

On Friday, it was reported that New Orleans plans to meet with Kellen Moore again following the Super Bowl. Since the team has already virtually interviewed him, and flew to Philadelphia for an in-person interview, this third meeting pretty much shows the Saints’ desire to hire him. However, since the Eagles are in the Super Bowl, New Orleans must wait until the game is finished.

In addition to scheduling another meeting with Moore, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has alerted other candidates that he’ll be continuing discussions with Moore, but emphasized a final decision hasn’t been made yet.

Moore became the leader for the position in recent weeks, as other names were removed from the search for various reasons. Aaron Glenn was hired by the New York Jets, Mike McCarthy pulled his name out of the search— reportedly because he knew Moore was the guy —and other candidates like Joe Brady also pulled their name out of the search.

That left Moore, Darren Rizzi (Saints), Mike Kafka (Giants), and Anthony Weaver (Dolphins) as the remaining names in the search. Everyone immediately crowned Moore as the best of the bunch.

The young offensive-minded coach has quickly ascended through the coaching ranks, and is only 36 years old. He started coaching as soon as he retired, transitioning from a backup quarterback on the Dallas Cowboys in 2017, to being the quarterbacks coach in Dallas a year later in 2018. From there, he was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, holding that role from 2019-2022.

He then moved on to the Los Angeles Chargers, staying with them for a season as offensive coordinator. Now, he’s in his first season as offensive coordinator with the Eagles, and he has a chance to win a Super Bowl.

Throughout his journey as a coach, he has worked closely with really good quarterbacks, led productive offenses, and won a lot of games. All of those things appeal to the New Orleans Saints, and that’s why they’re leaning towards choosing him to be the person to turn things around.
