Tyrann Mathieu sends message to Jalen Carter, C.J. Gardner-Johnson after Saints loss
The New Orleans Saints lost a tough matchup to the Philadelphia Eagles 15-12 in Week 3, and emotions were high from both teams at the end of the game. After Derek Carr threw a game-deciding interception in the final minute, the broadcast caught Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter being restrained by coaches as he talked trash to the Saints. Tyrann Mathieu and Marshon Lattimore were also captured giving it right back to Carter.
Following the game, Mathieu explained to the media what led to that scene, and it’s clear he has some pretty strong feelings about the Eagles. He started by admitting he and Lattimore were in the wrong for approaching Philly’s sideline, but said emotions sometimes get the best of everyone. As for what sparked those emotions, besides the loss, was the trash talk from Carter and Eagles defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Mathieu said he didn’t really hear anything from those two all game, until the end, when it was clear Philadelphia was going to win. In sports, that’s what’s called front running, when you’re only bold enough to talk trash while winning. Mathieu clearly wasn’t a fan of that. While he didn’t outright call them front runners, he did make it clear he’s hoping to share the field with the Eagles again.
Tyrann Mathieu hoping for a playoff matchup with Eagles after Week 3 loss
The Saints and Philadelphia aren’t in the same division, so they won’t be playing again in the regular season. The only way they’ll meet again this season is if they meet up in the playoffs. If that happens, there will be a lot of bad blood between the two teams.
Mathieu wasn’t the only one talking after the game. Gardner-Johnson, unsurprisingly, also had a lot to say. He called the Saints pretenders, and also trashed Derek Carr, saying the Eagles knew he’d eventually throw an interception. He even took to social media to clown New Orleans’ secondary for giving up the late 61-yard pass to Dallas Goedert.
If these two teams are going to meet again like Mathieu wants, both have a lot of work to do. They both sit at 2-1 after three weeks, but it’s a lot of football left to be played.
