Tyrann Mathieu’s attempt to support Derek Carr & Dennis Allen has Saints fans worried
It’s no secret a lot of New Orleans Saints fans aren’t fond of head coach Dennis Allen and quarterback Derek Carr. Both guys are entering the 2024 season on the hot seat, and unfortunately for them, there are plenty of Saints fans ready to see them go. Everyone knows that, including Carr, Allen, and the rest of the team.
That's why beloved team leaders like Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis have tried their best to support Carr and Allen, routinely voicing their confidence in their quarterback and head coach. Mathieu was recently asked about this vocal support of the people in, arguably, the two most important positions in football. While he tried to be a supportive teammate, he instead gave an answer that left fans laughing and discouraged.
Asked if it was important to establish that Carr is the team’s quarterback and Allen is the coach, the veteran safety responded yes, before saying, “I can’t always pick my family but I love them and I support them.” He went on to talk about the benefits of going through adversity, and how Carr and Allen are viewed under a microscope because of their positions. Tyrann Mathieu also paised the two for their hard work, and expressed that the team believes in them, supports them, and encourages them.
Tyrann Mathieu says Saints believe in Derek Carr and Dennis Allen
Mathieu surely was just trying to be supportive, and pledge his allegiance to his starting quarterback and head coach, but everyone can admit starting a statement with, “I can’t always pick my family, but I love them,” is kind of concerning. It’s not exactly the most ringing endorsement.
To be fair, though, it didn’t really matter what Mathieu said. Even if he gave a statement of support with full conviction, Saints fans wouldn’t have bought it. That’s just where things stand with Allen and Carr entering the season. There isn’t an amount of statements from Mathieu, Davis, Alvin Kamara, or anyone, that will get Carr and Allen in fans’ good graces.
That can only be accomplished on the field. For Saints fans to change their tune, New Orleans will need to win games, and Dennis Allen and Derek Carr will need to be reasons why. If the team is winning in spite of the two, fans will continue to call for their jobs.
