Dennis Allen took over as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2022 after Sean Payton decided to step away from coaching. While he hasn't been the most popular coach during his tenure, Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu recently spoke up on behalf of his coach.

Mathieu sounded off on X, noting that Allen is one of the best coaches he's been around. Demario Davis also responded to the slander with the shouting emojis, signaling that he agrees with his teammate.

Some of the backlash toward Allen stems from that the team has missed the playoffs in each of his two seasons and has underwhelmed as a whole. He was hired to take over for Payton due to how well he was able to transform the defense during his time as the coordinator and the defense has still played well under his tutelage.

Tyrann Mathieu sticks up for Dennis Allen

Allen will be entering a crucial third season as the Saints head coach in 2024 and missing the playoffs for a third straight year might be enough to seal his fate. That being said, the defensive players clearly love having him around. It would be interesting to see if the offensive players feel the same way about Allen given how the offense has performed in recent years but Mathieu and Davis are two of the more well-known players in New Orleans.

If these two are sticking up for Allen, that's quite telling. Hopefully, Allen can prove to everyone why he was indeed the right choice to coach the Saints after they go on a run this season.
