This offseason, some critics were bold enough to argue that New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara was over the hill. While he was coming off the least productive season of his career, Saints fans warned everyone that Kamara would remind them how elite he is, now that he’s playing in Klint Kubiak’s offense.

Four weeks into the season, that’s exactly what’s happening. Kamara is leading the league in yards from scrimmage with 536, and touchdowns with six. He already has a Player of the Week Award this season, and with how he and the New Orleans offense is playing, that may not be the only award he wins this season.

Beyond awards, the veteran running back is on pace to accomplish something he never has in his career. That’s rushing for 1,000 yards in a single season. While it may be hard to believe, since Kamara is one of the best running backs of his generation, he never went over 1,000 yards in any of his first seven seasons.

Currently averaging 90.5 yards a game, he’s on pace for 1,539 yards, which is well over 1,000. That means he has some room to spare over the next 13 games.

Projections, of course, are just projections. There are several factors that could ultimately prevent Kamara from continuing at his current pace. Injuries are a possibility, not only to him, but for the linemen that carve out lanes for him. Additionally, New Orleans’ offense could just unravel, and not be as productive as it has been.

Saints fans are hoping neither of those things happen. Kamara is a special talent, and everyone wants to see him on the field. With him on the field, New Orleans will put up points, and give it self a chance to win games.

The most yards the five-time Pro Bowler has rushed for in a season is currently 932, and he did that in 2020, playing only 15 games. He also had 16 rushing touchdowns that season, and caught 83 passes for 756 yards and five touchdowns. Named Second-Team All-Pro that year, that was undoubtedly the best individual season of his career.

If everything goes well, this season could be even better.
