Saints OC Klint Kubiak explains what has impressed him about Derek Carr
This offseason, the New Orleans Saints replaced longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. with Klint Kubiak. Kubiak most recently spent a season as the passing game coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, and he brought the Shanahan scheme to New Orleans. Head coach Dennis Allen believes this will help the offense tremendously, especially quarterback Derek Carr.
Carr is entering his second season with the Saints after a polarizing first year with the team. Battling through multiple injuries, Carr started all 17 games, completing 68.4% of his passes for 3,878 yards , 25 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. However, finishing with a 9-8 record, not everyone is sold on the veteran quarterback.
If Carr and Kubiak can get on the same page, that could change in 2024. This offseason, the two have been working to build a rapport and they’re off to a great start. Kubiak recently spoke with the media, detailing how he’s been impressed with his quarterback.
The offensive coordinator explained that Carr has “the demeanor you want” in a starting quarterback, from being coachable to being hard on himself and his teammates.

Carr has said similar things about Kubiak, praising the offensive coordinator for chasing perfection in a sense. The Saints quarterback explained he could have what he believes is a great play in practice and Kubiak would still be ready with feedback. Carr loves that, and Kubiak loves that he loves it.
The Saints are hoping this bonding leads to an improved offense and more wins. In 2023, New Orleans won nine games, and averaged 337.2 yards and 23.6 yards a game. So Kubiak isn’t inheriting a bad unit, just a group that could be better and more efficient, especially in the run game.
Since arriving, Kubiak has been focused on improving that run game, and that will make things much easier for Derek Carr. The offense is designed to operate off the run game, utilizing a lot of play actions, and that’s why the scheme is considered quarterback friendly. If things go according to plan, Carr and the Saints will have a big year.
