The New Orleans Saints have officially started training camp. With both rookies and veterans present, New Orleans is holding its first practice on Wednesday, July 24. On Tuesday, we learned some important names will participate in that practice. Alvin Kamara is one of those names. Everyone was waiting to see if the star running back would hold out or hold in, but he arrived for camp and the expectation is he will practice.

Some other players’ practice status was unknown because of health reasons. Third-year receiver Chris Olave has been dealing with a shoulder injury throughout the offseason, and free agency signee Chase Young underwent neck surgery this offseason. However, both veterans passed their physical on Tuesday, and head coach Dennis Allen said they will practice.

Allen explained that both veterans will practice in some form. So while they will be on the field, the team will likely take them through a ramp-up process to get them acclimated. Rookie corner Kool-Aid McKinstry, who has an offseason foot surgery, is also going through this proces. While these players may not be full go, it’s great they are on the field at all.

The players that won’t be practing are Nephi Sewell, who tore his ACL in Week 18, Tanoh Kpassagnon, who ruptured his Achilles during this offseason, and Juwan Johnson, who underwent an offseason foot procedure, as well as any players on a PUP or NFI list like Ryan Ramczyk.

New Orleans is certainly excited that Olave and Young will be on the field, though, as both players will have huge roles for the team this season. Olave is entering his first season as the unquestioned No. 1 receiver for the Saints, and he’s being asked to take his game to another level. Young, on the other hand, was brought in to restore an elite pass rush for the team.

In order for both of these young players to accomplish these things, they have to be healthy, so they’re getting off to the right start.
