On Tuesday, star running back Alvin Kamara reported to training camp for the New Orleans Saints along with the rest of the team’s veterans. Unlike his teammates, it was unknown whether Kamara would show up or not. That’s because the veteran running back left mandatory minicamp early because of a desire for a new contract.

With the Saints owing Kamara more than $25 million in 2025, 2024 is essentially the final season of his contract, because the team will release him before paying him that much for a single season. With that understood, Kamara was hoping to sign an extension or a reworked deal that would give him more money for this season or some long-term security.

Since that hasn’t happened yet, Kamara was on holdout watch. He ultimately showed up for camp, but shortly after reporting, Kamara took to Instagram with a post that had fans doing their best decoding work. The Saints running back posted a picture of him and legendary running back Marshawn Lynch.

This led to everyone looking for a hidden message. The most common takeaway was, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined,” Lynch’s famous quote that he answered every question with during media day for Super Bowl 49. Lynch had to give the media answers to avoid being fined, and that’s exactly what he did.

The reason people are jumping to this quote for Kamara is that it’s fair to assume he reported to training camp so he won’t get fined. If the running back did actually hold out, he would be fined for every day he missed since he’s still under contract with the team.

This is all an assumption; Kamara hasn’t offered any words to confirm or deny this fan theory, but it’s not the first time he brought up Lynch since departing from minicamp. Earlier this offseason, when the NFL world was reacting to scenes from Hard Knocks: Offseason that showed how the New York Giants were talking about Saquon Barkley, Kamara referenced Lynch’s famous take care of your bodies, chicken, and mental speech.

It’ll be interesting to see if Lynch’s words have any effect on Kamara’s future with the Saints. Even though he’s in attendance, he surely still wants his contract situation resolved. With a big year potentially in his future under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, we must wait and see how Kamara and New Orleans plays things.
