It’s no secret the New Orleans Saints entered the Week 4 game against the Atlanta Falcons pretty banged up. Among the injured players was Alvin Kamara. The star running back was on the injury report all week with a hip injury and injured ribs, but found a way to play in Sunday’s game.

Following the 26-24 loss, Kamara opened up to the media about the specifics of his injury. He revealed he currently has broken ribs, sustained in the Week 3 loss, but also said missing Sunday’s game was never an option for him.

As if Saints fans didn’t already have enough respect for the veteran running back, his decision to play through broken ribs furthered endeared him to the fan base.

Alvin Kamara reveals he played through broken ribs

Kamara didn’t just play with the broken ribs, he dominated. He continued his elite start to the season by carrying the ball 19 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also caught seven passes for 42 more yards. His lone touchdown was a go-ahead score, where he dragged multiple Falcons defenders into the end zone. Unfortunately, the defense couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Throughout the game, it was clear Kamara was battling. After every carry, he lingered on the ground, before picking himself up slowly. Still, he was back lined up a play later, ready to lead the team to victory. Ultimately, the Saints fell short, but the effort from Kamara can only be respected.

As honorable as his performance was, it’s concerning as well. Kamara is 29 years old, playing in his eighth NFL season. He shouldn’t have to endure battles like this every week for the Saints to have a chance to win. Unfortunately, Taysom Hill, who finished as the second-leading rusher for New Orleans on Sunday, left the game with his own ribs injury.

Now at 2-2, New Orleans has to collectively get healthy and get back on track. If other players don’t start stepping up, the Saints could run their best players into the ground by mid season.
