Saints’ Dennis Allen challenging A.T. Perry ahead of what could be a breakout season
New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen is delivering very blunt messages this training camp. On the first day of practice, Allen told the media that running back Kendre Miller, who left the first practice with a hamstring injury, needs to figure out how to stay healthy if he wants to make the team.
A week later, Allen isn’t dialing it back, challenging another one of the Saints’ promising young players. When asked about second-year receiver A.T. Perry, Allen gave an honest assessment that Perry has been doing fine, but he wants to see more from him. The head coach said specifically Perry needs to make more plays— the kind of plays that other guys are making in practice.
Dennis Allen wants to see A.T. Perry make more plays in camp
The reason Perry is even on anyone’s radar is because he made some very explosive plays as a rookie. After a big preseason, Perry played in 10 regular season games for the Saints, catching 12 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns. In the final game of the season, Perry caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown.
His big-play ability had everyone excited about what he could do in year two, and many people expected him to establish himself as the WR3 alongside Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, Perry’s offseason hasn’t gone as good as it could be going according to his head coach.
Earlier this year, during offseason activities, Allen said that Perry has a long way to go. While he has a ton of talent, this head coach would like to see more consistency. That’s seemingly still the message for Perry now in training camp.
With a ton of camp left, Perry seems like a lock to make the roster, but he’ll have to show more if he’s going to have the kind of breakout season everyone thinks he’s capable of.
