The New Orleans Saints have completed their first practice of training camp and things are already intense. During day one, second-year running back Kendre Miller had his practice ended early after leaving the field with a hamstring injury. Head coach Dennis Allen spoke about Miller after practice, and he had some rather direct comments.

Talking to the group of gathered media at camp, and on a livestream, Allen bluntly said that Miller “needs to figure out how to stay healthy because you can’t make the team when you’re always in the training room.” Certainly an honest assessment, but tough words for a player to hear after getting hurt on the first day of training camp.

If it wasn’t clear by Allen’s words, this is hamstring issue isn’t the first injury of Miller’s short career. In fact, his battle with injuries predate his time in the league. In his final season at TCU, he sprained his MCL in the College Football Playoff and couldn’t participate in any pre-draft workouts.

Last season, as a rookie in the NFL, Miller dealt with a patella sprain, a hamstring injury, and a sprained ankle. As a result, he only appeared in eight games in his first year. Unfortunately, year two is off to a similar start.

Surely, the frustrating part for Miller and the Saints is the fact that he’s a talented player with a bright future. In those eight games last season, Miller ran the ball 41 times for 156 yards and one touchdown. He also caught 10 passes for 117 yards.

The bulk of that production came in a Week 18 game against the Atlanta Falcons, when the young running back carried the ball 13 times for 73 yards and a touchdown. With that performance coming in the regular-season finale, fans have been excited to see how Miller would continue to build in year two.

This hamstring injury pours water on that excitement, an Allen’s brutal words didn’t help with reigniting things. We’ll have to wait and see how the injury impacts Miller’s camp and season.
